The current automotive landscape sees Vehicle Electrification nearing an inflection point thanks to changing consumer attitudes, improved battery economics, broader access to charging infrastructure, and stricter regulatory policies.
In this scenario, one of the activities conducted by our automotive engineers consists in supporting a TIER1 in the development of an On-Board Charger (OBC) for a full-electric vehicle.
The OBC is a piece of equipment for Electric Vehicles (EV) or Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), placed internally, aimed at being the source allowed to charge the High Voltage (HV) Battery.
More in-depth, apart from the OBC with integrated supply management, the entire HV system is made out of a charging socket, a charging gate cover, and the controllers for the inductive and co-flow charging.
Along with the OBC, there are also other active components that are part of the HV System, such as HV Battery, DC/DC converters (HV-Booster for the DC Charging and another one for supplying the 12V LVDC Battery). In addition, LV components are included in the system controlling and coordinating the HV system.
OBC has to take care of the following functions:
- charging of the vehicle’s HV Battery by converting power from an AC Charging station or a domestic wall-box
- power stage and electronic integration for the AC Charging
- charging management integration of AC and DC Charging
In contrast with the AC Charging, the power converters for the DC Charging are installed in the charging station itself. In this case, the OBC shall only manage the communication with the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).
Thanks to these kinds of activities and partnerships, Kineton is increasingly becoming a technical reference for leaders in the E-mobility industries.
